Have you ever struggled with how to get your dog to take a pill?
Well join the club! I have 3 little four legged dog friends and they take allergy medicine on a regular basis. Sometimes they have to take medication when they are sick as well.
Getting your dog to take a pill can be a real struggle that can be super frustrating. It’s not like you can explain to them that if they would just take the pill that they would feel better. That would be way to easy!
Instead they make this face!
so we have to get creative!
I have tried everything from pill pockets to chicken. Sometimes I can hide it good enough in the chicken that they don’t notice….but most of the time that little trick fails miserably. They just eat the chicken and leave the pill on the floor.
If you are reading this post, then I am sure you can relate.
Some pills are also strongly scented and a dog can smell the pill…even when you think you have it hidden well in whatever concoction you have created.
Here are some ideas on how to get your dog to take a pill (but I will save my favorite for last).
- Pill pockets (my dogs want nothing to do with them)
- Soft Dog Treats (Sometimes this works for me)
- Lunch Meat (mine eat the meat and leave the pill, this one never works for me)
- Cooked Chicken (this one works occasionally but I think they are on to me)
- A Scoop of Peanut Butter (This one is great and works 95% of the time unless they are sick…then I have to resort to my Favorite).
Drum roll please……….
And my favorite way to get my dogs to take a pill is………..
A slice of Kraft American Cheese Singles!!!
Yep! Even when they are not feeling good, they will devour that little slice of cheese like they are from a third world country.
How do I do it….
I simply rip a piece of the slice off. Lay the pill on the torn piece and fold it into a delicious little ball. Small enough for them to swallow without choking but large enough to completely conceal the pill. Plus the cheese is very mushy in texture so it is very easy to work with.
If you have a dog that refuses to take a pill, then give the Kraft Singles a try and let me know how it works out for you.
Until next time my friends, Christie
